And You Thought You Were Normal III: The Center of the World

Four years since I released my last (non-live) mix, I decided to ease into a return with a familiar structure. The "And You Thought You Were Normal" series focuses on diverse tempos, wide-ranging track selection and psychedelic lyrics to create a loose musical journey. Tracks tend to be more personal than the average mix and, frankly, weirder. The last AYTYWN was subtitled "Waving Goodbye," and explored death. This new mix, "The Center of the World," focuses on a journey inward. What will you find when you turn out the lights, ingest your favorite intoxicant and drill deep into the bedrock? The Sublime? A long suppressed horror? Partying troglodytes?

I spontaneously did a new mini mix recently. Text tracklist follows below. It's called Tek, for no reason, and has no real theme. I was going to call it "Upfront Tek" until I realized that any mix with a cover of a Guy Called Gerald track from 1988 can hardly be called upfront. I was going to say that it was a little more obscure stuff until I realized that John Legend, MSTRKRFT, Danny Tenaglia and Josh Wink are hardly underground artists. So I don't know what else to say about the mix other than I like this sort of music and hope you do too.

Holiday in the Tropics

New mix is up!

This was supposed to be done in December. I had mixed up a rough draft and realized I was not happy with the result. So I scrapped the whole thing and added about 10 new tracks. I was really struggling with how different the older tribal sound was from newer emerging house music based on similar Brazilian/Caribbean rhythms. All my "diverse" mixes have been proud amalgamations of numerous influences, but one can only go so far. It wasn't the cultural divide that bothered me so much as it was the divide in production techniques. Back when I really started defining my tribal sound clubs (even in the Midwest) still could get several hundred dancers together on a weeknight, and some boasted ten times that on weekends. But these are different times now, and producers across the globe are making dance music for increasingly intimate spaces. There are still some bigger "club bangers" on this mix, but I killed a few sacred cows to create some semblance of unity (hopefully without giving up too much of the diversity inherent in this sort of endeavor).
Can you tell I like Diplo? How about Buraka Som Sistema? These producers ended up on 7 or so of the tracks I used, but I'm sure you won't mind. They're rather of good at what they do. Riva Starr also deserves mention. It will be difficult for me to make a mix in the near future without featuring more of his music. Enough! Here's a text track listing, should you desire one.
