And You Thought You Were Normal III: The Center of the World

Four years since I released my last (non-live) mix, I decided to ease into a return with a familiar structure. The "And You Thought You Were Normal" series focuses on diverse tempos, wide-ranging track selection and psychedelic lyrics to create a loose musical journey. Tracks tend to be more personal than the average mix and, frankly, weirder. The last AYTYWN was subtitled "Waving Goodbye," and explored death. This new mix, "The Center of the World," focuses on a journey inward. What will you find when you turn out the lights, ingest your favorite intoxicant and drill deep into the bedrock? The Sublime? A long suppressed horror? Partying troglodytes?

I've been getting fairly comfortable with a style veering toward slightly poppy (Black Box, Scissor Sisters), melodic tracks (Mark Knight, Luciano) with a more retro, early 90's feel (Simian Mobile Disco, Autodeep & Romorri), sprinkled with some bass/breaks (Evil Nine, Four Tet) for good measure. I also got to mess around more with a tempo "arc," going from 119ish BPM up to 127ish and back down to 110. Enjoy!

I spontaneously did a new mini mix recently. Text tracklist follows below. It's called Tek, for no reason, and has no real theme. I was going to call it "Upfront Tek" until I realized that any mix with a cover of a Guy Called Gerald track from 1988 can hardly be called upfront. I was going to say that it was a little more obscure stuff until I realized that John Legend, MSTRKRFT, Danny Tenaglia and Josh Wink are hardly underground artists. So I don't know what else to say about the mix other than I like this sort of music and hope you do too.

Creepy Crawlies

This new mix is the inaugural post here on my blog- I hope it will be one of many! I plan on linking to all my old mixes here as well, so people can find them more easily. But that's still in the (near) future!
Since Halloween is coming up I wanted to make a mix featuring tracks that all gave me goosebumps or made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Artists like Ben Klock, Voodeux, and Peace Division have been doing this quite well ever since I began listening to them.
It actually bothered me that Itamar Sagi's "Black Gold" is so beautiful because I felt like it didn't quite fit the creepy theme. Ultimately it is such a well-produced track that it gave me goosebumps, so I let it stay.
Obviously Trent Reznor is a master, so when I had the opportunity to lead off with one of his tracks for David Lynch's Lost Highway, I took it. Kind of a strange way to begin a house mix, but the "WTF?!?" factor made it worthwhile, I think.
This is not a particularly poppy or melodic mix, and it won't appeal to everybody, but at least we get the electro-meets-Michael Jackson antics of Hot Pink Delorean as a closer. Really, how could I pass up a song about Zombies on a Halloween mix?
