Last Chance

I've been getting fairly comfortable with a style veering toward slightly poppy (Black Box, Scissor Sisters), melodic tracks (Mark Knight, Luciano) with a more retro, early 90's feel (Simian Mobile Disco, Autodeep & Romorri), sprinkled with some bass/breaks (Evil Nine, Four Tet) for good measure. I also got to mess around more with a tempo "arc," going from 119ish BPM up to 127ish and back down to 110. Enjoy!

The Wedding Reception

I've been DJing some wedding receptions lately. This mix represents a certain part of the night at a reception. It's maybe 10:30. The 10 year olds are tuckered out and full of cake. The DJ just played a few slow dances in a row. The open bar has done its work. The grown folks are ready to party. That's where this mix comes in. The last hour and 20 minutes of the party, from 75 all the way to 133 beats per minute. Hope you enjoy!

This mix is near to my heart. In the early 1990s I was growing up in a conservative religious home. Our church was opposed to drinking, drugs, dancing and gay sex; pretty much everything that had formed house music years earlier. I was ignorant to all that, though. All I knew is that when C&C Music Factory came on the radio, I loved it, then felt guilty for loving it. The track was poppy, yet aggressive! It's what I still like about house now. A decade later I was DJing in college and came upon a used copy of "Gonna Make You Sweat" in the budget bin. I rocked the Hip House remix at many a house party, to great results. This DJ mix, yet another decade later, highlights house that stays true to the jackin' spirit of the early 90's, when house bubbled into the mainstream. I ended the mix with the classic Clivillés and Cole track that captivated me 20 years ago.

This is my first mix using Traktor Pro 2! It took forever and I know I've only scratched the surface of what is possible with that software. Most of the music isn't new; I've been looking for an excuse to put some good old 303-esque acid synths together with tracks whose focus is a heavy bassline.
